COP16

COLOMBIA

October 26th, 2024

For the first time ever we are participating in the United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties. We will be leading a workshop called "Cities to Blossom". We are so proud!!!

Land Acknowledgment & Commitment
BASE is located on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone (San Francisco) and the tribes who live along the Columbia River, including Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya and Molalla (Portland).

We acknowledge that the San Francisco Peninsula is the traditional territory of the Ramaytush Ohlone people and Portland is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work there. We recognize all Indigenous communities - past, present, future - and are grateful for their ongoing presence and their understanding of the interconnectedness of all things that has maintained harmony with nature for millennia. We respectfully honor this legacy and find inspiration from this land on which we gather today.

We wish to honor indigenous wisdom, pay our respects to the Ancestors, Elders, and Community of Native Peoples, and affirm their sovereign rights as First Peoples. As part of our recognition of and commitment with Native Peoples of this territory, BASE pays the Yunakin Land Tax to the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone and provides financial support to the Native American Youth and Family Center in Portland.

BASE also acknowledges the directions and the elements. We acknowledge the East, where every morning our sun shines, the fire that sustains the dragons, the source of revitalization and productivity. The unity, the human-animal-plant-creature that revives the process of ecological healing; the sacred union of genders, races, species; the emergence of the mixture, of new beings with the capacity to amend mistakes and create better worlds. The connection between culture and nature, between the inner and the outer, between the individual and the collective, between the BASE and its elements.

We acknowledge the South, the beloved South of rainbow birds, land where the clouds caress the mountains, the source of sweetness for the soul and the mind. The human-forest, the spirit of nature, which invites us to be open to new experiences, to undertake journeys with confidence and determination, to build a path towards ecological awareness. The relief that brings the feeling of belonging, of knowing that we are not alone and that we have a BASE to be brave and propose different worlds.

We acknowledge the West, where the Pacific Ocean embraces us turned into mist, the water where whales lead orchestras, the source of abundance. The proportion of natural systems that invites us to live in the measure of fairness, giving and receiving, recognizing that equity is defined by the complexity of relationships between time, space, energy and culture that have been elaborated over centuries. The gratitude for what we are and what we have, for being here, at the BASE.

We acknowledge the North, where the northern lights take over the sky, where the cold air forms currents of winds that travel the world, the source of rebirth and rejuvenation. The geomancy that maintains the balance of all forces, the balance of coexistence and reciprocities between culture and nature. The calm that makes us resilient, accepting, flowing without resistance, breathing deeply and being present, here and now, at the BASE.

We acknowledge Pachamama, goddess of the Earth, the old woman who is part fire, part water and part mountains. The great mother that ensures abundance and fertility to all biomes. We acknowledge the Sky, god of the Earth, the old man who is part eagle and part lightning bolt. The great father that protects all lives. The Mother and the Father of BASE.

We acknowledge the Center, the inner self, the place where feelings live, where golden phoenixes emerge, the source of stability and calm. The movement that reminds us that we are alive, that it is necessary to always change, mutate, transform, that invites us to keep creativity dancing at BASE.
